…Papervision brings a virtual creature to life?

Papervision

This “Papervision” creature is quite possibly the most amazing thing I’ve seen in a long time. I kid you not that when I first got it to work, I felt like I was playing around in the future.

To get your own, just visit this page and download and print the required symbol. Then, point your webcam at the symbol and watch the creature spring to life.

It works in real time, so you can move either the camera or the symbol all around and the creature will react accordingly, and it’s even aware of depth, so you can move the symbol close to or away from the camera, and the creature will grow or shrink as if it was a real object.

Amazing!

…It’s TGI Friday: Hanna In A Choppa?

Hanna In A Choppa

Hanna In A Choppa is a simple yet fun helicopter game where you must fly your choppa around and land near the flag using only your keyboard.

The controls are simple, the orange on black design is fantastic, the level designs are varied and imaginative and the developer threw in a few inside jokes to keep things interesting. (Wait till you get to level 21!)

What more could you want from an after Thanksgiving time waster?

…It’s Things Thursday: PURE*ZENDER?

PURE*ZENDER

The Plush Department PURE*ZENDER Art PC is a design computer with a ceramic casing that looks even better than it performs. (And that’s not to say that it performs poorly, with its Intel Core 2 Duo processor and all the bells and whistles of a modern computer, but just that it looks so damn good!)

I am handmade I am handpainted.
I am urban, graffiti i am street.
I am moulded and shaped and glazed. I am unique.
There is no other like me.
Inside me is a powerful machine.
I will help you to stay in contact with your friends, to watch movies and play games. I can assist you with your work while you are listening to music. I will help you to find things, people, places, new experiences.
I am there for you when you need me and sleep while you don’t. I wake up on the push of a button and do for you what you ask me to.
I am not a television or record player or calculator i am all of that at the same time and more.
I am fast and silent and beautiful.

The art itself was done by Zender, a well known Dutch artist whose unique street style lends itself well to this tiny box, and other limited edition PURE* Art computers in the works are scheduled from Delft Blue, Mijn Schatje, Piet Boon, and Edward van Vliet.

…Flickr is mapping the world?

Flickr Alpha Map

Flickr has collected almost ninety million geotagged photos, and for every geotagged photo they have up to six Where On Earth IDs, which are unique numeric identifiers that correspond to the hierarchy of places where a photo was take: the neighborhood, the town, the country, and so on up to the continent in a process called reverse-geocoding.

Eventually they got to thinking: If they plotted all of the geotagged photos associated with a particular WOE ID, would there be enough data to generate a mostly accurate contour of that place?

Apparently the answer is yes, and though it’s not a perfect representation of the place, it’s definitely getting pretty close.

As a gift to the Flickr community, they’ve even made these 150,000 (and counting) WOE IDs with proper (-ish) shape data available via the Flickr API.

It might be a fun toy right now, but give it a few years and add in all of the data from geocoded cell phone photos, and this just might be the future of cartography as we know it.

…PETA doesn’t like Thanksgiving?

Cooking Mama

PETA never ceases to amaze me.

This year, in protest of Thanksgiving’s annual turkey slaughter, they took the Cooking Mama game and gave it an “unauthorized” twist, as Mama is now the ruthless killer of animals, and you must help her prepare, stuff and cook a bird while extra gore tries to distract you from the task at hand.

Surprisingly, the Flash game is well-done, and serves up a heaping serving of PETA propaganda as you play, though it’s all optional, and you can pick and choose what you want to learn more about, so they’re not jamming the message down your throat.

The turkey used in the game however…
