A Japanese research team recently became the first people to film a live giant squid (24 feet long!), though they were unable to keep it alive after capture. They also believe that the squids are more plentiful than first thought, and that they ought to be able to capture more in the future now that they know where to find them. Coming soon to the sushi isle of a Costco near you.
