Didn’t You Hear continues to grow, but one thing that’s missing is the community. Each day, the number of daily visitors increases, but I’d love to hear from you. Do you agree with me? Do you disagree with me? Do you agree with each other?
I understand that part of the problem is that it takes time to comment, and that time is a very precious (and scarce) thing these days. So what if you could get something back for the time you give up while commenting? What if each time you posted a comment, something good happened? Impossible you say?
That’s what I though as well, until I read about a program on Some Random Dude called Comment Love. It works like this:
- You comment on a post.
- Every time you comment, I will donate 50 cents to charity.
Simple, huh? I thought so too. The one stipulation that I’m going to have to add is that I’m capping monthly donations at $50, since this is an out of pocket affair, but giving back is something that I love to do anyways, and I’d love to hit that maximum, so feel free to comment away. Since this is a community building exercise though, I’m not looking for people to game the system. Thus, the comments made should be valuable to the Didn’t You Hear community. For example:
- “You suck” – Probably not going to count.
- “You suck, because you like cars, and I think they’re gas guzzling polluters that kill too many people” – Go for it. I’d love to hear your feedback, both positive and negative, so as long as you can explain yourself, feel free to tear me apart.
Now, I’m not saying that everything you say has to have a negative connotation. I’d like to hear positive things too. It’s just that I want you to know that I’m open to anything that you have to say that contributes to what I’m writing about.
To start it off, I’m going to be donating the money raised during the month of March to The Global Fund, a fund that helps the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. It’s the fund behind Project (RED), and one that I think is making some definite and observable contributions to the world as a whole.
Also, since I’m also doing this to try and build the Didn’t You Hear community, for every link that links to this post, I will donate $5 to the total contribution. Thus, if you have a website or a blog of your own, just post a link, and I’ll add $5 to this month’s total donation, in addition to the $50 cap.
You can keep track of the progress by keeping an eye on the Comment Charity box on the right side of your screen, just above the subscribe button. In there, I’ll be keeping track of how much has been raised, and I’ll try to update it as frequently as possible so that you can get an idea of how well the Didn’t You Hear community is doing.
So here’s the goal of this week’s TGI Friday: Comment on this post, and let’s get this thing started off right. Who knows, sometimes it’s the smallest donations that can make the biggest difference in someone’s life.

This is a really nice idea. It’s good to see someone doing something charitable, and it’s even better when this sort of reason is chosen.
I’ve been visiting your site for a few months now, and I’m continually impressed by the quality of products, factoids and general web-media you dig out. It’s such a brilliant range, and aside from the cars, it really matches my interests. Stretching out that network is only for the good, and donating to worthy causes as a biproduct of that expansion is excellent.
My affection and respect for this place has grown. ^_^
Krax,
Thanks so much for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoy reading what I post about, and I hope Didn’t You Hear continues to impress you. I’m always trying to find the most interesting and unique topics to cover, so it’s good to hear that the effort isn’t going unnoticed. I also hope that the network continues to stretch, and along the way we can do something that will help out others, which is always a good thing.
Brilliant, man :)
I always had the inkling that you were big on the giving back, but this really does prove that despite many appearances to the contrary out there, there are also some damn decent people too.
I will continue to pimp your links to random places :)
feuermaus,
I am a fan of giving back, so I enjoy things like this that let me do it in creative and productive ways. Thanks for reading (again), and a preemptive thanks for any links you send my way.
