Velopresso – Coffee Cart On Wheels

If you’re going to spend a lot on fancy coffee, you should at least get that coffee in a fun and/or interesting way.

Enter: The Velopresso

The Velopresso is a coffee cart on wheels, designed to stay off the grid while enabling a single barista to run the entire operation. The cart itself was designed from the ground up around a custom rear-steer tricycle, a unique pedal-driven grinder, and a robust gas-fired lever espresso machine. The result is a fusion of human power, sensory pleasures and technology – old tech meets new tech, pedal power meets caffeine power, and engineering meets aesthetics.

And since there’s no motors to run or electricity needed, the Velopress doesn’t make a lot of noise, meaning you can have your coffee in relative silence as you enjoy the scenery around you.

If you’re interested in buying your own Velopresso, they’re taking pre-orders in early Summer of 2013, though the company is based out of the UK, so you may need to factor in some shipping if your coffee dreams take you elsewhere.

…QuickOrder will revolutionize the way you get coffee?

Phil Lu’s QuickOrder is an “iPhone/iPod Touch application that allows the users to purchase their favorite Starbucks drink without waiting in line”. It’s also a great example of what will be possible when the entire world lives in your cell phone.

Instead of actually interacting with a real live person, you simply point and click in your order, complete with customization and a kind little thank you area to remind your barista that someone actually cares about what they’re doing.

There is even a semacode system in place to verify your order.

Will this be the future of customer service? Considering the fact that this goes one step further towards a world where we cease to interact directly (and despite how beautiful and simplistic this looks), I sure hope not.

…Sex sells coffee at Cowgirl’s Espresso?

Starbucks is the undisputed king of the coffee shop land, and all should bow down before it and succumb to its greatness, right? Not so fast. If there is one thing that sells more than omnipresence, it’s sex, and at Cowgirl’s Expresso, they’re selling a lot of coffee, and they’re doing so with a lot of sex. That’s because the baristas behind the counter are more Victoria’s Secret and Hooters than they are green apron and black shirt. Based in Seattle, the unofficial coffee capital of the US, Cowgirl’s Coffee has to follow the Washington state law that requires workers to cover both breasts and butts, but they definitely do so in a very loose sense. I’m sure tips at a place like this aren’t that hard to come by.
