When you think of high fashion, cockroaches (or bugs of any kind for that matter) are probably not the first things that come to mind. Fashion designer Jared Gold is trying to change all that though with his crystal studded brooches made from living Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Each roach broach comes with a unique hand made pattern of Austrian Swarovski Crystals on its back that takes about an hour to design and install. The roaches are all male to ensure sterility, and each one comes with its own leash set including a pin to attach to your clothing and a chain that clasps to the cockroach’s carapace (hard upper shell) to keep him from “running amok”. Apparently, if you take care of your roach with regular feeding (roaches love fresh bananas) and fresh water on a damp paper towel or cotton ball (dehydration is the main cause of death), they will live for up to a year, providing you with both companionship and a fashionable clothing accessory when needed. I’m sure this would make a wonderful gift, provided the receiver isn’t entomophobic, or a lifetime cardholder of the PETA organization.
