The radio is dead, and Jelli is here to replace it.

Ok, so maybe that’s a bit extreme, but the concept behind Jelli is a fascinating one, and does have the potential to change radio as we know it.

Jelli

Essentially, Jelly is a single radio station that’s 100% listener controlled. Users can nominate songs, vote for songs they like, and bomb the ones they don’t, and the song with the most votes at the end of the currently playing track gets the next spot in line. The more you listen, the more power you gain, though even first timers have the ability to push a song over the edge.

The result is a mix of music that will surprise and delight, with an ever changing flow of community taste and creative control.

Just don’t expect to hear the Billboard Top 40 playing on repeat any time soon.

…Kutiman creates music through you?

THRU-YOU

Kutiman is an artist that takes YouTube videos and turns them into musical magic.

He starts by sampling the various clips that users have uploaded onto YouTube, such as a guitar lesson or a drum demo, and then combines them, along with the videos, into something else entirely. It’s a bit hard to explain, so I suggest that you just watch and see:

If you liked that, he’s created six more tracks that follow a similar structure, and all are available through YouTube on his site. (Which features a fantastic, destroyed-YouTube design, and is worth a look all on its own.)

…Steve Vigneau likes toothpaste?

Toothpaste

Steve Vigneau had a lot of toothpaste, so he decided to find out what would happen if he mixed them all together into one minty concoction.

Apparently, “this multi-sample toothpaste concoction didn’t taste bad, but was overwhelmingly mint backed by a few other unidentifiable herbs. Even after rinsing my mouth a number of times the taste still lingers, but this matches my experience (and complaint) with all of the Colgate, Crest, etc toothpastes I’ve tried in the past.”

It’s amazing what some people will do in the name of science!

…Fonts can be naughty?

Porn Poster

I’m definitely not a fontophile, but the occasional mix of letters and subject matter is so perfect that it makes me stop and take note.

Pedro Campiche’s poster, which spells out “I Spent All Day Watching Porn” in letters that are far from PG, is one such font. It’s subtle enough that you might miss it on first glance, but risqué enough that you definitely won’t miss it a second time around.
