…It’s Tuner Tuesday: FAS Matiz?

FAS Matiz

With enough motivation (and time, money and beer), you can turn just about any car into the car of your dreams.

For Fourdin Auto Sport out of Belgium, that meant taking the 550hp, 7.0L LS7 V8 out of a Corvette Z06 and shoving it between the frame rails of a Chevy Matiz.

13 months and 1,500 man hours later, they ended up with the car you see before you, a pure-bred race car that will reach 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 162 mph. (For comparison, the stock Matiz takes 22 seconds to get to 60, and triple digit top speeds are out of the question without a long downhill road and a bit of a tail wind.)

Besides the engine, obvious modifications include a full roll cage, a SUPER wide-body kit, new suspension, wheels and tires, and a wing out back to keep the tail end planted on the track.

It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but when you dare to dream, the results of that dream can often come in the strangest of packages.

…Michael Marcovici likes big, expensive art?

Michael Marcovici used to be eBay’s biggest powerseller, but after watching his multi-million dollar company go belly up in 2005, he decided to follow his true passion: Art.

Marcovici One Billion Dollar

Not content with just any art though, Marcovici’s art is some of the biggest (physically) in the world. One example of this is the piece he calls ‘One Billion Dollar’ which is, as you can guess, a billion dollars. The $100 bills (all 10 million of them) are stacked on 12 standard pallets, and is “not so much about what you see but what you could do or not do with the money”. In addition, Marcovici is proud to say that this “is the most expensive piece of art ever made’.

Marcovici Time Sand

His second piece, called ‘Time Sand’, is a little more subtle, but no less impactful. It consists of 972 30Kg bags of Rolex Time Sand (the sand used in hourglasses) and since each bag takes about 30 days to flow through a standard hourglass, the goal is to represent a generous estimation of an average lifetime of 81 years.

…Mechanical Turk has many faces?

Mechanical Turk Faces

Andy Baio from Waxy.org was intrigued by his initial experience with Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, and wanted to know more about the people that participate in the service, including what they look like, and how much it would cost for them to reveal their faces.

To make the process easy, he fired up the Mechanical Turk and added a simple task to the queue: Upload a photo of yourself holding a handwritten sign that says “I Turk for…”, filling out why you turk.

At $.05 per photo, there wasn’t much response, but at $.25, the responses started to come in, and by $.50, he had a decent sized sample.

The results? 30 people total – 20 men and 10 women, almost all of which were white and in their 20s and 30s. 21 turk for money, and the other 9 turk for fun or boredom.
