Nimbus Cloud Computer

The Nimbus Cloud Computer “works like a PC” only it’s “better than a PC” because it’s free. Instead of paying for the Nimbus, you simply allow them to show you an ad while using the computer, and it pays for itself. If you don’t want the ad, you can also pay a monthly fee to use the Nimbus ad free, but where’s the fun in that?

A Cloud Computer is a re-imagination of the idea of a computer. We think that an ordinary computer is too expensive, too complicated, and too much for what most people want to use a computer for. What we did is put all of the costly and complicated pieces of hardware and software into our data centers. You then use a smaller, simpler, much less expensive device that’s always connected to the internet to control your computer. We think this is a much better way for you to do just what you want with a computer.

The computer comes with a keyboard and mouse, and you simply provide a monitor and Internet access, and you’re on your way.

Is this the future of computing?

Starbucks

Sure, Starbucks brings Wi-Fi to the masses, but most people who use it are either on a laptop or an iPhone.

What would happen then if Starbucks and their semi-public Wi-Fi had existed a few years ago?

Improv Everywhere wanted to find out, and decided to take a few old desktops complete with CRT monitors down to the local Starbucks and set up shop.

It’s a pretty funny idea, and the results are unexpected, so check out the Mobile Desktop:

Calibrize

If you’re doing any kind of ‘for print’ creative work, it’s important to calibrate your monitor so that what you see on screen is what you see on paper.

Calibrize is a new freeware app that’s designed to help you “calibrate the colors of your monitor in three simple steps. Just download the software and follow the procedure to generate a reliable color ‘profile’ and adjust the colors of your monitor automatically.”

Are you ready to Calibrize?

Facebook Beacon

As Facebook continues to grow, it continues to need new ways of making money from each of its users.

One of those ways is Project Beacon, where Facebook builds a page for an advertiser, and then links to it from various profile pages.

How does it create those links?

By monitoring what sites you visit, and then phoning home after you visit an advertiser’s site.

As expected, many users are not exactly excited about Facebook’s ability to watch everything they do, and are looking for ways to stop the Beacon.

Luckily, it’s as easy as using a JavaScript blocking plug-in in Firefox, and blocking the specific URL that Beacon uses.

Facebook Beacon Block

The steps are as follows:

  1. Download and Install the BlockSite plugin for Firefox.
  2. After restarting Firefox select ‘Add-ons’ from the Tools menu.
  3. Click the ‘Options’ button on the BlockSite extension.
  4. Click the ‘Add’ button.
  5. Enter http://*facebook.com/beacon/* into the input box.
  6. Click ‘OK’.
  7. Click ‘OK’ again and you are good to go.

It’s good to know that there’s always someone looking out for the little guy.

…Apple gave the world a shocker?

Though I didn’t expect any of my predictions to actually come true (I hoped they would, but didn’t expect they would, and I think I ended up with 0 out of 8 correct), Apple dropped a bomb in the form of the iPhone that caught everyone by surprise. I even got a few Apple fanboy [...]

…Macworld is hard to predict?

So with Macworld fast approaching (get ready for an Earth shattering keynote at 9 am PST), I thought I’d do my part and make some predictions for what is “only just the beginning”. Though these are completely guess based and rely on no inside information or fact gathering what so ever, none of the other [...]
