Joey Roth and Grovemade Team Up For Wood Speakers

Joey Roth Wood Speakers for Grovemade

Joey Roth has once again created a lustworthy set of speakers that would look amazing at home, on your desk at work, or even on display in a modern art museum.

(I’m a big fan of Joey Roth, and have featured his Ceramic Speakers and Sorapot Teapot on the site before.)

Made of either walnut or maple, the speakers are machined out of solid wood for wood’s superior acoustic properties that create clear and nuanced sound, and then mounted on stainless steel stands. A mathematically ideal horn is integrated directly into the enclosure, boosting the speaker’s low frequency response without the group delay and phase distortion inherent to more common bass reflex enclosures.

Each set of speakers is crafted one at a time in the Grovemade workshop in Portland, Oregon, and requires hours of CNC machining and skilled hand forming to complete.

You won’t find a better looking set of speakers, and with prices that start at just $499, it’s a reachable splurge for the person that wants their speakers to look as good as they sound.

…It’s Movie Monday: Johnny Cupcakes Cupcake Cannon?

Johnny Cupcakes Suitcase Tour

To celebrate his roots, Johnny Cupcakes is recreating what got his company started: Slinging wrinkled up, gas scented t-shirts out of his crusty suitcase while on tour with his band.

The tour will take him all across the country, and along the way, he’ll stop at respected businesses, including art galleries, boutiques, bakeries, toy shops, and more, and giving away free treats and surprises at stops along the way.

One of the recent surprises was at Kamp Grizzly in Portland, Oregon, where he busted out a Cupcake Cannon and fired it at willing volunteers. Thankfully, they documented the whole thing in stunningly slow motion, so that you too can share in the joy that a Cupcake Cannon can bring:

…Michael Neff loves chalk?

Michael Neff - Chalk

Michael Neff’s Chalk series is a terrific idea in which he outlines various objects’ shadows in chalk, and then photographs them at night, giving each shadow an odd, sort of radiating glow.

So far, cities that he’s done this in include New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and a small town in Oregon, and the series is ongoing, so he has plans for more in the future.

…Thunder Struck makes cusom bikes?

Hammer

Thunder Struck Customs makes some sleek and sexy bikes, but the one that really caught my eye was this one, called the Hammer. Featuring a 147 cubic inch motor, six speed transmission, and style that borrows from Ferraris, AC Cobras, concept cars and drag bikes, it definitely put Thuder Struck’s Medford, Oregon shop on the map.
