…The Thing Quarterly is a unique bit of news?

The Thing Quarterly

The Thing Quarterly is a ‘periodical’ that arrives in the form of an object. For each issue, an artist, writer, musician or filmmaker is invited by the editors (Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan) to create a useful object that somehow incorporates text. The object is then reproduced and hand wrapped at a wrapping party, and mailed to subscribers with the help of the United States Postal Service.

Previous issues include a cutting board, a deck of playing cards, and a mug, so you never know exactly what you’re going to get, though it’s pretty much guaranteed to be unique, fun and/or awesome.

…It’s Things Thursday: Family Guy?

Family Guy Logo

Family Guy sure does love the special edition.

First, there was the Freakin’ Party Pack that featured Family Guy Volumes 1-6, Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin, themed ping pong paddles, a ping pong net, ping pong balls, poker chips and playing cards.

Now, there’s the Blue Harvest Special Edition, featuring a DVD of the double-length Very Special Episode that was a full-scale spoof of George Lucas’ saga, plenty of DVD special features, a collector’s t-shirt, 3D glasses, collector’s trading cards, and a 20-page “Art of Family Guy Presents: Blue Harvest” booklet.

Can there be too much Family Guy?

(No; The answer to that question is no.)

…It’s Things Thursday: Custom 52?

Custom 52

Custom 52 wants to know what the art world can do with a deck of cards.

“Meant to inspire and bring together the artistic community in a new and exciting way”, Custom 52 is “an online design community using playing cards as [a] canvas.”

Artists submit their ideas, and then the public votes to pick the best ones. The top 52 designs are then printed onto a deck of playing cards that “everyone can enjoy and spread across the land.”

It’s an interesting idea, and the first cycle of cards are amazingly creative and beautiful, so spice up your next poker night with a set of Custom 52s.
