Will Roegge is the best of the best when it comes to documenting the automotive world on video, so it should come as no surprise that his latest work, called Climb Attack, which documents Rhys Millen’s record setting run up the Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb, is nothing short of spectacular:
Formula DRIFT kicked off the 2009 season last Saturday, and with a new race format and new rules designed to increase the number of rounds during the main event, there was plenty of action on the streets of Long Beach. In the end, last year’s champion Tanner Foust edged out Robbie Nishida for third place, and after a close final, Ryan Tuerck took home his first win of the season over Samuel Hubinette.
Cars that made their debut at the event include Tanner Foust’s new NASCAR V8 powered Scion tC, Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s new 2010 Mustang GT, and Rhys Millen’s new Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Absent from the competition was Samuel Hubinette’s new Dodge Challenger, though the team did tease it from the trailer, and it looked like it will be ready for battle soon.
Not surprisingly, Long Beach was home to a few spectacular crashes, including Ken Gushi’s slide into the wall on Friday that knocked him out of the competition, and Tommy Suell and Katsuhiro Ueo’s crash during qualifying that crushed the left side of Tommy’s AE86 and prevented him from competing. On Saturday, Conrad Grunewald smacked his Corvette into the tire wall after following Ryan Tuerck too wide into turn 10, Calvin Wan hit the wall in a solo crash while battling Ryan Tuerck, and Vaughn Gitten Jr. and Samuel Hubinette tangled heading into the final turn, leaving Gitten’s Mustang with a bit of a nose job and Hubinette’s Viper with a crumpled rim.
Formula DRIFT now heads to Road Atlanta for Round 2 on May 8th and 9th, and judging by what was seen at Long Beach, the 2009 season is going to be a good one.

If you missed last night’s Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. event in Las Vegas, then worry not, because Red Bull has kindly uploaded footage from the event to YouTube in HD.
(Side Note: It’s good to see a company finally understand that people want instant access to television content online and in HD so that you don’t have to sift through a bunch of low quality screen grabs that people took of their own TV!)
Remember last year when Rhys Millen managed to miss the landing pit during his truck backflip practice and break three vertebrae in his neck and compress and break two vertebrae in his back?
Well apparently his doctors have given him the go and he’s going to give it another try this New Year’s Eve during the second annual Red Bull New Year No Limits event, and he’s even posted a video of the crash to wet everyone’s appetite:
According to Rhys:
Last year we attempted what was before then thought impossible. Laws of physics and vehicle dynamics were pushed to the limits with success, but failure came in one small mis-calculation. My body can be broken but my mind cannot. This year, people will witness the first ramp to ramp back flip in an off-road truck – ever.
In addition to Rhys’ record setting attempt, Robbie Maddison will also be breaking a record during the event as he attempts to jump over 100 feet into the air and land atop the replical Arc de Triomphe in front of Paris Las Vegas. He’ll then drop off the Arc and freefall for more than 50 feet to land on a massive landing ramp below.
There’s good news and bad news regarding Rhys Millen’s truck backflip.
The good news is that Red Bull has released another video about the jump:
The bad news is that on Rhys’ fourth cardboard box practice landing (he successfully landed three previous jumps into cardboard) he overshot the landing area and broke three vertebrae in his neck [...]
Rhys Millen is my new hero.
After conquering Pike’s Peak and Formula D, he has decided to become the first person to purposely backflip an off-road racing truck.
As part of ESPN’s New Year’s Eve No Limits broadcast, Rhys will jump his truck off of a special ramp that he and his team designed and built, with [...]
