…Rhys Millen is an injured motorsports legend?

There’s good news and bad news regarding Rhys Millen’s truck backflip.

The good news is that Red Bull has released another video about the jump:

The bad news is that on Rhys’ fourth cardboard box practice landing (he successfully landed three previous jumps into cardboard) he overshot the landing area and broke three vertebrae in his neck and compressed and broke two vertebrae in his back. Thus, no 360-degree Red Bull Experiment this year, though thankfully, Rhys will live to drive another day.

Anyone want to take his place?

…Rhys Millen is a motorsports legend?

Rhys Millen Backflip

Rhys Millen is my new hero.

After conquering Pike’s Peak and Formula D, he has decided to become the first person to purposely backflip an off-road racing truck.

As part of ESPN’s New Year’s Eve No Limits broadcast, Rhys will jump his truck off of a special ramp that he and his team designed and built, with the goal of landing wheels side down on the other side.

Can he do it?

Tune in to The Red Bull Experiment to find out.

…It’s Tuner Tuesday: Formula Drift?

Formula Drift Logo

On Saturday, I had the chance to go and see Formula D’s “The Finals” at Irwindale Speedway (yes, I did get stuck on Interstate 5 on the way down from San Francisco due to that massive accident), and I must say, if you’re at all a fan of the four wheeled machine, make sure you check out one of Formula Drift’s events at a track near you.

Pontiac Solstice

If you’re not familiar with the sport, think of drifting as two automotive ballerinas battling it out in a boxing match. It’s gracefully controlled mayhem, and in my opinion, it’s easily the best form of four-wheeled entertainment on the planet.

…It’s Tuner Tuesday: Pontiac Red Bull Solstice GXP?

Rhys Millen

Rhys Millen isn’t good at going straight.

Rhys Millen is good, however, at going sideways. And he’s good at doing it very, very, very quickly.

Lucky for Rhys, there are two driving sports that don’t require much forward momentum: drifting and hill climbing. And also lucky for Rhys, he’s a god of both.

Why then did he give up his tire frying V8 powered GTO that was given to him to conquer the hills and slides with?

Because Pontiac made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Would you turn down a 500 hp turbocharged roadster?

Didn’t think so.

Rhys’ new GXP uses the 2.0 liter ECOtec engine that comes from the factory, but it’s been tweaked and tuned to produce over 500 horsepower thanks to turbocharging and a host of other go fast goodies (thick-wall iron cylinder liners, a race-ported cylinder head, tubular stainless steel exhaust headers, a performance camshaft, a unique engine control system and a water to air intercooled turbocharger).

Rear-wheel driven, Red Bull painted, six-speed shifted Pontiac Solstice GXP that runs off of E85 ethanol-based fuel (it’s good for the environment too)?

Yes please.
