…Mac and PC think outside the box?

In addition to Apple’s product roll-out, they also took the wraps off a new ‘out of the box’ banner ad featuring Mac and PC:

I’m actually a huge fan of advertising like this, and I hope that more companies follow Apple’s lead and start to expand their thinking into new and unique areas so that users will actually want to watch their ads, rather than them just forcing ads down our throats at every stray click.

…An own goal can win a soccer game?

I’m a big fan of outside the box thinking, but this one takes the cake:

During the 1994 Shell Caribbean Cub between Barbados and Grenada,

Barbados needed to win the game by two clear goals in order to progress to the next round. Now the trouble was caused by a daft rule in the competition which stated that in the event of a game going to penalty kicks, the winner of the penalty kicks would be awarded a 2-0 victory.

With 5 minutes to go, Barbados were leading 2-1, and going out of the tournament (because they needed to win by 2 clear goals). Then, when they realized they were probably not going to score against Grenada’s massed defense, they turned round, and deliberately scored on their own goal to level the scores and take the game into penalties. Grenada, themselves not being stupid, realized what was going on, and then attempted to score an own goal themselves. However, the Barbados players started defending their opponents goal to prevent this.

In the last five minutes, spectators were treated to the incredible sight of both team’s defending their opponents goal against attackers desperately trying to score an own goal and goalkeepers trying to throw the ball into their own net. The game went to penalties, which Barbados won and so were awarded a 2-0 victory and progressed to the next round.

…It’s TGI Friday: Portal: The Flash Version?

Portal: The Flash Version

Portal brought ‘think outside the box’ gameplay back into the spotlight with a mix of physics and fun.

If you missed out on the actual thing though, don’t worry, as We Create Stuff has created a 2D Flash version for all your portal needs. It might not have the fancy look and feel of the original game, but it’s definitely got the challenge, so see if you can escape.

Oh yes, there will be cake.

…Nike makes SB Dunk tributes?

Nike’s SB line of skate shoes are often some of the most creative tributes to grace your feet.

Nike Dunk SB 720 Degrees

First, there’s the Nike Dunk SB “720 Degrees”. Inspired by the first skateboarding arcade game, Atari’s 720 Degrees, these kicks feature a perfect match to the game’s color scheme, and will definitely make you stand out at the next arcade competition.

Nike Dunk SB Newcastle Brown Ale

Then, there’s the Nike Dunk SB “Newcastle Brown Ale”. Inspired by the delicious brown ale out of Newcastle, England, these kicks feature a hoppy style that is perfect for your next beer fest.

Regardless of your style, there’s no doubting the creativity that goes into a mash-up like this; and I commend Nike for thinking outside the box when is comes to design.
