Shwood Turns Good Wood Into Sunglasses

Shwood

Shwood creates beautiful wooden sunglasses that take retro styles and give them a natural twist.

Shwood Blanks

In their own words:

A simple experiment with nature. Born from the limb of a Madrone tree, a rusty pair of cabinet hinges, and lenses from the corner store, Shwood has been a curious endeavor from the beginning. An endeavor to create a product that encompasses the individuality and uniqueness that can only be found in natural surroundings. A desire to experiment with design, materials, and aesthetics in the search for something that works. Free from passing trends, the brand’s focus remains that of its roots, innovation and creation. Long live creativity.

Shwood’s in-house manufacturing process merges precision technology with classic skilled craftsmanship to create a timeless art form. Every step from veneering and precision lens cutting, to shaping and finishing is conducted in our own Portland-based workshop to promise an entirely handcrafted eyewear piece. Wood manipulation is kept to a minimum in order to showcase the medium’s natural and unique splendor. All models are accompanied by 100% UVA/UVB protection Carl Zeiss lenses imported from Italy. Polarized lenses are also available.

With collections that range from $125 on up to $195 for limited edition collaborations made with rare and unique woods (including recycled skateboard decks!) there’s a style and a price for everyone, so check out Shwood to see what fits.

…ITS OK?

ITS OK

An artist named sighn has begun a project called ITS OK, where he will cut the words “ITS OK” out of pieces of wood one million times. (Making this a “limited edition”.)

Each piece is made from a solid piece of wood (no plywood or particle board) and is hand cut and numbered by the artist himself. He expects to be done cutting in 60 years!

Worry not, however, as for each “ITS OK” he cuts and sells, he’ll also be planting a tree through the Arbor Day Foundation. Thus, it’s ok to purchase one without worrying about the environmental destruction a project like this could cause.

…You can wear the City Farm?

Soop - City Farm

If you liked Handscape, then be sure to check out Soop’s City Farm, a similar set of laser cut rings that feature the shapes of goats, chickens, pigs, cows, trees, sheep (both black and white) and foxes.

While they’re not yet available on Soop’s online shop (they’ll be there in two weeks), DYH was able to get in touch with Wai-Lian from Soop and get the inside scoop on a November 30th release date on their Etsy shop.

I think this scene ring thing is catching on!

…Today is Earth Day?

Earth Day Flag

Earth Day is today, which means that it’s time to remember that we’re living on a giant spinning orb that we need to take care of. From its somewhat humble beginnings in 1970, Earth Day is now observed by millions of people in 175 countries, and is the largest secular modern-day holiday in the world. The inspiration for ED is that even small changes can make a big difference, so you’re encouraged to take on projects like planting a tree, changing your light bulbs, or focusing on recycling.

If recycling is your project of choice, then check out the Ecopod, a “simple, aesthetically pleasing, and rewarding way to process recyclables”. The home recycling center features removable storage containers for glass bottles, paper, plastic bags, and aluminum cans, along with a child safe “ecostep system” that crushes your cans and bottles down to an easily manageable size. Plus, BMW Designworks designed the pod, so you know it’s going to look good wherever you decide to store it. Being Captain Planet has never been easier.
