…Formula DRIFT opened on the Streets of Long Beach?

The Streets of Long Beach hosted the first event of the 2010 Formula DRIFT season, and with all teams arriving fresh from a few months of R&R (that’s Rebuild and Replace) it was a chance to see some new drivers, new rides, and a few old favorites.

The new ride category included Samuel Hubinette’s new Dodge Challenger, which was finally finished after being teased all of last year, and is making north of 800 horsepower thanks to a methanol burning V8:

Another new body style making its Formula Drift debut was Conrad Grunewald’s 2010 Camaro, which was looking good in a custom body kit with a supercharged LSA pushing upwards of 600 horsepower to the wheels. Conrad didn’t manage to make the top 16, so it looks like he’s still getting a feel for the car, but when he finally gets this thing dialed, it’s going to be a beast:

Lastly, Vaughn Gittin Jr. took the wraps off his 2011 Ford Mustang RTR-C, which is easily my new favorite car, thanks to a full carbon fiber body kit, a 5.0 liter, supercharged V8 making 680 horsepower, and an awesome Monster Energy themed paint job:

Making his driving debut in the States was Fredric Aasbo, who was looking super impressive in his Toyota Supra, and managed to snag fourth place after upsetting quite a few seasoned drivers in their head-to-head battles:

Old favorites included Rhys Millen’s Hyundai Genesis Coupe, which features a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine making 500+ horsepower, a carbon fiber body, and the hottest umbrella girl ever:

Kyle Mohan and his Mazda RX-8, which was sporting a new paint job, new carbon fiber body panels, and the ability to spit fire out of the rotary engine:

Tony Brakohiapa’s Mustang with new Tuskegee Airmen “Red Tail” livery, which was easily one of the best looking cars out there, and will hopefully return to looking that way after they fix the new spoiler design (thanks to a minor run-in with the wall):

Last year’s champion Chris Forsberg and his V8 powered Nissan 350Z:

And Tanner Foust’s NASCAR V8 powered Scion tC, which was fresh from a scenic tour of Mulholland Drive:

In the end, it was Vaughn Gittin Jr. and his RTR-C Mustang that would take top spot over Rhys Millen and his Hyundai Genesis Coupe, with Tanner Foust rounding out the all energy drink podium. (Vaughn Gittin Jr. drives for Monster Energy Drink, Rhys Millen for Red Bull, and Tanner Foust for Rockstar Energy Drink.)

With just one of seven rounds on the boards, it’s still anyone’s championship to win, and they’ll head to Road Atlanta next on May 7-8 for the Road to the Championship event, where the competition should be as fierce as ever.

…The Zenvo ST1 is a serious supercar?

The Zenvo ST1 is a supercar. From Denmark. Seriously.

Despite coming from a country that’s not known for its supercars, the ST1 certainly looks the part and has specs to match, with the 7-litre V8 using both a supercharger and a turbocharger to make more than 1,100 horsepower and 1,430 NM of torque.

Specs on paper are one thing, but actual real-world performance is often another, so Zenvo gave one of their prototypes to Bil Magasinet TV for a test drive, and judging by their reaction, it’s going to be a hit:

It may look like the combination of a VW GTI grill, Maserati Corse hood, Lamborghini Murcielago side scoops, Lexus IS-F gill slits, Ferrari F599 quarter windows and F430 side mirrors, Nissan 370Z roof and GT-R taillights, but when you’ve got 1,104 horses of turbocharged AND supercharged power under the hood, no one’s really going to see anything but a blurry view of the rear bumper.

Called The Zenvo ST1, this Danish supercar has been in the works since 2004, but is just now going through its final stages of testing and is expected to see the light of day (all 15 of them) some time in early 2009.

Specs include the twin-charged 7.0-liter V8, six-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel-drive, and plenty of carbon fiber to keep the weight down, and stats come in at 3.2 to 62 mph, 120 mph in under nine seconds, and a top speed of 233 mph.

No pricing information is currently available, but if you have to ask…

…It’s Tuner Tuesday: Pontiac Red Bull Solstice GXP?

Rhys Millen isn’t good at going straight.

Rhys Millen is good, however, at going sideways. And he’s good at doing it very, very, very quickly.

Lucky for Rhys, there are two driving sports that don’t require much forward momentum: drifting and hill climbing. And also lucky for Rhys, he’s a god of both.

Why then did he give up his tire frying V8 powered GTO that was given to him to conquer the hills and slides with?

Because Pontiac made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Would you turn down a 500 hp turbocharged roadster?

Didn’t think so.

Rhys’ new GXP uses the 2.0 liter ECOtec engine that comes from the factory, but it’s been tweaked and tuned to produce over 500 horsepower thanks to turbocharging and a host of other go fast goodies (thick-wall iron cylinder liners, a race-ported cylinder head, tubular stainless steel exhaust headers, a performance camshaft, a unique engine control system and a water to air intercooled turbocharger).

Rear-wheel driven, Red Bull painted, six-speed shifted Pontiac Solstice GXP that runs off of E85 ethanol-based fuel (it’s good for the environment too)?

Yes please.
